Most of our residential railing work arrives through builders and architects, and the reason is not price. It is that the shop drawings show up, the rail fits the opening, and the install does not blow up the finish schedule.
We come out of commercial structural and seismic work — hospital retrofits, resort packages, industrial steel. So when a detail needs to be engineered rather than decorated, we can size the member, design the connection, and put a certified weld on it. A cantilevered guard, a floating stair, a gate leaf wider than the hardware wants: those are engineering problems before they are aesthetic ones.
We take intent from your drawings and return shop drawings for review before fabrication — so surprises happen on paper, not at final walkthrough.

Southern Utah is hard on exterior metalwork. Full-spectrum UV, 60-degree daily temperature swings, blowing sand, and hard water off the irrigation will find every shortcut in a finish system.
Exterior-rated powder over properly prepped and primed steel. Far more UV- and abrasion-stable than a wet-painted rail, and it will not chalk out in three summers.
Sealed tube assemblies so moisture cannot get trapped inside, galvanized or hot-dip treatment where exposure warrants, and stainless fasteners and cable at the coast of the desert — pools, spas, and irrigation spray.
Blackened and clear-coated mild steel for interior character, 316 stainless where corrosion is the driver, aluminum where weight matters. We specify to the condition.
Tempered glass panels and stainless cable runs for view-driven elevations, tensioned and aligned so long spans stay true.
Exposed welds ground and blended, hidden connections where the design calls for an uninterrupted line. On architectural work the joinery should disappear.
Gate hinges, latches, and operators sized for the actual leaf weight, so a heavy custom gate still swings true years later instead of sagging into the strike.
Step one
We walk the site, measure the real conditions, and talk through design intent, budget, and code. On a remodel we measure what was actually built, not what the plan says.
Step two
Shop drawings for your review and your architect's. Profiles, infill, connections, and finish get settled on paper before a single piece of steel is cut.
Step three
Built in our shop by AWS-certified welders. Welds ground and blended where they show, and the finish system applied before anything leaves the building.
Step four
Set, anchored, and field-fit on-site. Where the existing structure has drifted, we adjust in the field rather than forcing a part that does not want to go.
Custom steel railing generally runs from roughly $150 per linear foot for a straightforward powder-coated picket or panel rail up to $400 or more per linear foot for stainless cable, glass-combo, curved, or heavily detailed architectural work. Stairs are quoted separately from rail. The honest answer is that the price is driven by design complexity, finish, and site conditions more than by footage, so we quote from drawings or a site visit rather than a phone-call guess. For a typical residential railing package, plan on two to four weeks from approved shop drawings to installation, depending on our shop schedule and finish lead times. Curved or radius work, glass systems, and large gate packages take longer. On new construction we schedule backward from your framing and finish dates so the rail lands in the right sequence — we would rather give a builder a real date than an optimistic one.
Utah adopts the International Residential Code and International Building Code with state amendments. In broad terms, residential guardrail is required where a walking surface is more than 30 inches above the surface below, at a minimum 36 inches high, with openings that will not pass a 4-inch sphere. Handrails on stairs typically run 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosing with a graspable profile. Commercial work under the IBC uses 42-inch guards and adds ADA requirements. We design to the code your jurisdiction is enforcing and confirm with the building department when a detail is unusual — the rail should pass inspection the first time.

We take design intent from architects and designers, produce shop drawings for review, coordinate with framing and finish trades so blocking and substrate are right, and hold to the construction schedule. Our commercial background — structural, seismic, and hospital work — means we can engineer a connection when a detail needs more than a decorative answer.
It will, if it is built for it. Intense UV, big temperature swings, and blowing sand are hard on finishes and on unsealed assemblies. We seal welded assemblies so moisture cannot collect inside tube, prime and powder coat with exterior-rated systems, and specify stainless hardware and cable where the exposure calls for it. Skipping those steps is why cheap exterior rail chalks, streaks, and rusts at the welds within a few seasons.
Usually. Bring us a photo and a measurement and we will tell you honestly whether we can match the profile and finish closely enough to be invisible, or whether the better result is replacing a full run. We would rather say so up front than deliver a patch that reads as a patch.
